Hello Judges of the Major for the day Committee.
My name is Jalaya Pierce and I am a 5th grader this year at Birchgrove for the Arts Elementary. I have been at Birch Grove since Kindergarten and I will be graduating soon. I like this contest because when I am 16 I plan to be apart of a junior police program because I care for people and helping them. I want to be mayor for a day so I can help my neighbors. My neighbors include the homeless, kids that are in need, and seniors. I would like to have a day called, “Let’s be friends”. On this day we find ways on how to help our neighbors.
1. We have kids that have needs to come to our table and we show them to a place that can help them with food, clothes, medications and even toys.
2. We help the homeless build tiny homes they can live in and earn money helping other homeless get help and get them jobs in food shelters.
3. I would like to have a traveling drama program for our seniors. We would have talent from around town giving the gift of drama and music with the lives of our seniors in them.
I have so many more ideas to help “Lets be friends” A very exciting day including a mini parade. I know being a mayor must be a hard job but one day, I may have to do it. I think being a good neighbor and a good friend goes a long way for a happy and growing world. I think if people are happy they will be kind. If they are kind we all can stay safe.
My mom said, who knows, Mayor for the day, then a Police officer, then President of the United States. I can help all types of neighbors.

If I were mayor I would learn about city projects like the ones in park and rec. I would suggest we create a park that is all inclusive. I would lead city council meetings to help the public understand what the city does. I would help people listen to each other. And tell them to be respectful even if they disagree. I might have to make hard decisions. I might say “yes” or “no.” If I don’t know what to say, I would choose what makes more sense for the city. Some ideas that have never been tried I might try. We might not have enough money and I would say “no.” I would do all of this to help the city. I would help meet the city’s goals and work to make the city the best it can be.

If I were mayor for a day, I would focus on making our city more friendly and enjoyable for everyone, especially children. Kids have unique perspectives on what makes a community thrive, and their ideas can lead to positive changes. By listening to their voices, we can create a better environment for all residents.
One of my main priorities would be to enhance parks and recreational areas. I would propose adding more playgrounds and green spaces where children can play and families can gather. Additionally, I would organize community events, such as movie nights in the park, to encourage families to spend time together outdoors. These activities can promote physical health.
Another important aspect of my plan would be to improve educational resources and ensure safety in our neighborhoods. I would advocate for more after-school programs that offer tutoring and creative activities, allowing kids to explore their interests. Furthermore, I would work on increasing safety measures, such as better street lighting and crossing guard so that children could walk to school and play outside with no fear.
In addition, I would try to get younger children and adults to volunteer because volunteering can help you feel better about your self-esteem and confidence. It also could help to not feel combat, social isolation and depression.
In conclusion, if I were mayor for a day, I would prioritize the needs and ideas of children to create a more vibrant and safe community. By enchanting parks, promoting education, ensuring safety, and more.

Being a mayor isn’t easy. They have lots of responsibilities. Sometimes, cities are responsible for war memorials. If I were mayor for a day, I would present a motion at the city council meeting to make improvements at the World War I memorial.
I would improve the World War I memorial because it is old and dirty. The memorial was built in 1922 in honor of those who fought. It is bad that it looks neglected, because the memorial is remembering the soldiers who put their lives on the line for their community and country. Some people might even have loved ones listed on it. I want to make the memorial a nice place that people will want to visit and stay for a while.
I would refinish the marble monument and repair the base. I would also plant rose bushes around the memorial. In addition, I would replace the broken sidewalk and make sure it stays edged Also, I would make sure there was a flag flying at the memorial all the time with a light. It looks neglected with an empty pole there. Last of all, I would install a bench for people to come and read the names. People might want to sit and think about the brave men who served our country.
If I was mayor for a day, I would make improvements at the World War I memorial to help make my town a better place to be. I want to make Roosevelt look fresh and appreciated. I am thankful for all the mayors that work so hard to make their cities nice places to live.
